Volunteering for the Homeless Count

Last night, I spent a couple of hours interviewing people at a Vancouver homeless shelter (not one of those managed by St. James) as part of the 2011 Homeless Count. I spoke to about a dozen people, asking them questions about why they had become homeless, how they manage, and what it will take for them to get a permanent place of their own.

Homeless Count 2011 - Happening Today!

Today is the regional homeless count across the Lower Mainland, the first full such count since 2008 (though the City of Vancouver conducted its own count in 2010). The project, staffed by 800 volunteers who fan out across the city and through emergency shelters, is crucial in providing current data on the numbers and circumstances of those who are homeless. While no single-day count is perfectly accurate, it is a big help in estimating progress made and the remaining gap.
