Nominees for Board of Directors Sought

As a registered society and charity St. James is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and in 2010, the current Board is looking to recommend a select group of new candidates for election in order to fill some identified skills gaps and further reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

Better Palliative Help Urged for Cancer Patients & their Caregivers

 

According to a new report from the Canadian Cancer Society, access to palliative services is patchy, while stressed families go into debt to look after loved ones dying of cancer.

May 2nd to 9th: Hospice Palliative Care Week

May 2nd to 9th 2010 is national Hospice Palliative Care Week. This year the theme is "discovering your voice".
 

Public and Community Accountability

The accountability structures of not-for-profit societies in BC are an occasional topic of media and community discussion, especially as and when a particular organization, or the future of a neighbourhood like the Downtown Eastside, come under the public spotlight.  

At St. James, we take the issues of accountability and public confidence very seriously. We are the recipients of significant public financing and private donations that are provided to support high quality services to vulnerable individuals.

St. James Endorses Streetohome Foundation 10-Year Homelesness Plan

 The Board of St. James Community Service Society has formally endorsed the Streetohome Foundation's new 10-year plan to end homelessness in Vancouver.

At the Opening of New Downtown Eastside Olympic Media Centre

This morning I was at the opening of Downtown Eastside Connect, the new media centre at Woodwards aimed at press visiting Vancouver for the Olympics. Information about various local not-for-profit housing groups, including St. James is on display, with the goal of highlighting all the work being undertaken to address homelessness and revitalize the neighbourhood.

New Emergency Housing Beds Making an Immediate Impact

The immediate impact of the 26 new women's emergency housing beds in the Downtown Eastside is aleady being felt. The number of recorded "turnaways" (requests for service we cannot meet because of lack of space) at our main Powell Street women's facility droppped by 50% in December, the month after the opening.
