
Shelter Support Worker
The Shelter Support Worker facilitates the day-to-day communal living among the clients/residents by providing emotional support, information, referrals and advocacy to women and children residing in the Women’s and Children’s Programs.
· Grade 12.
· 1 year’s experience related to women and children in crisis in a residential setting, or 1 year’s experience in a related field such as Women’s Advocacy Association/Women’s Shelters/Women’s Transition House/Second Stage Housing, or related training such as the Children Who Witness Violence Training Course.
· Current First Aid/CPR Certificates for adults and infants required.
· Non-violent Crisis Intervention course preferred.
· Ability to communicate effectively in English verbally and in writing.
· Able to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.
· Ability to work in a stressful environment and in a changing work environment.
· Ability to work with, and empathize with people suffering from abuse, poverty, family violence, cross-cultural issues, addictions, AIDS, and other life-limiting illnesses, mental illness, and the grief process.
· Demonstrated knowledge of child welfare/protection issues.
· Demonstrated knowledge/awareness of women’s issues.
· Demonstrated skill or training in supportive counseling, conflict resolution or other related field.
