St. James opening 26 interim women-only shelter beds on Downtown Eastside

Vancouver – St. James Community Service Society is opening 26 interim women-only emergency shelter beds at 329 Powell Street beginning the week of Nov. 28, 2011.

St. James Community Service Society has been selected by BC Housing to develop, manage and operate an innovative project at Vancouver's former Remand Centre.

Small Victories fundraising luncheon a resounding success in 2011

The 2011 Small Victories  lunch, held October 13 at the Pan Pacific Hotel, was a successful event, raising $100,000 in gifts and pledges. About 150 guests celebrated the 50th anniversary of the St. James Community Service Society at the luncheon. Hosted by Global TV anchor Chris Gailus (pictured below with SJ Board President Marleen Morris), guests watched two new videos: one about the new mural, and one celebrating our anniverary.

Improving the lives of vulnerable people in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is what St. James Community Service Society is about and has been about for half a century. In keeping with this goal, SJCSS is proud to unveil, at the Powell Street Festival, a mural by Vancouver artists Joey Mallett and Rita Buchwitz.

 

November 25th, 2009 - 26 New Emergency Housing Beds for Homeless Women Opening November 30th, 2009

On November 30th, 2009, St. James Community Service Society is opening 26 permanent new emergency housing beds for homeless women in Vancouver.

October 23rd 2009 - Small Victories

St. James' annual Small Victories luncheon that happened on October 22nd was a stunning success. Over 250 guests attended the event, raising over $75,000 that will go towards supporting social and healthcare services in the Downtown Eastside and beyond.
