Cindy Beedie pledges $375,000 in matched gifts to help reach final $4.3 million goal to expand Powell Place Women’s Shelter

Number of homeless women steadily rising, accounts for 30 per cent of all homeless people in Vancouver

VANCOUVER – November 22, 2012 – Homeless women in Vancouver are one step closer to having an expanded and improved Powell Place Women’s Shelter, thanks to a matching total pledge of $375,000 from Vancouver’s Cindy Beedie and the Beedie family. Cindy will be matching donations from now until Christmas day, December 25th, 2012.

Cindy Beedie named as capital campaign chair

VANCOUVER – November 19, 2012 - Vulnerable women in Vancouver will have more safe options after the expansion of Powell Place women’s shelter. The project, targeted to be complete in early 2014, will double the shelter’s current capacity from 26 to 52 beds and will serve Vancouver’s most vulnerable women.

The capital campaign will be chaired by Cindy Beedie, philanthropist and spouse of Beedie Development Group President Ryan Beedie.

Powell Place within $149,000 of building expansion for women most in need

Donors give $229,000 so far to expand and upgrade Downtown Eastside shelter

VANCOUVER – Dec. 17, 2012 – Momentum continues to build in raising funds to expand and upgrade Powell Place, an emergency shelter for women on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

“Our daughter sought refuge in Powell Place while addicted to heroin and not wanting to live at home,” noted donor Patsy Thorpe when she made her contribution. “It was the only time we felt she was safe.”

Cottage Hospice honoured as important part of Vancouver history

Burrard View Park is a jewel in Vancouver’s Wall Street neighbourhood, hidden to nearby traffic that whizzes by on its way to the highway, bridge, or downtown core. Yet the park, with its scenic views of Burrard Inlet and the North Shore mountains, is an important part of Vancouver’s history and is being honoured as part of Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s Places That Matter Plaque Project.

One step closer to affordable housing at former Remand Centre on Gore Street

The development application for affordable housing at the former Remand Centre on Gore Street has now been submitted to the City of Vancouver. Details are available here.

 

 

Tenanting information for former Remand Centre housing

The tenanting plan for the former Remand Centre at 250 Powell St. is currently in development. The process for receiving and assessing applications has not yet been defined. Once we have finalized our plans, detailed information will be widely distributed in the community.

St. James opening 26 interim women-only shelter beds on Downtown Eastside

Vancouver – St. James Community Service Society is opening 26 interim women-only emergency shelter beds at 329 Powell Street beginning the week of Nov. 28, 2011.

Small Victories fundraising luncheon a resounding success in 2011

The 2011 Small Victories  lunch, held October 13 at the Pan Pacific Hotel, was a successful event, raising $100,000 in gifts and pledges. About 150 guests celebrated the 50th anniversary of the St. James Community Service Society at the luncheon. Hosted by Global TV anchor Chris Gailus (pictured below with SJ Board President Marleen Morris), guests watched two new videos: one about the new mural, and one celebrating our anniverary.
