February 15th 2008 - St. James Selected as a Service Provider for Vancouver Supportive Housing Initiative

St. James Community Service Society is pleased to announce that it has been selected to manage tenant services at one of the 12 new supportive housing sites across Vancouver.

St. James will be the provide support services to an estimated 100-130 tenants at the development at 1050 Expo Boulevard in Vancouver’s Downtown South area. The project is a partnership with 127 Society for Housing who will develop and manage the building’s operations. The partnership brings together the many years of housing and social services experience of both societies to help create a successful new program.

The project is part of an initiative by the Province and the City of Vancouver to provide supportive housing in many neighbourhoods throughout Vancouver. The 12 selected sites are consistent with the City’s Supportive Housing Strategy, which seeks a geographic balance for housing developments to provide for all the needs of all Vancouver neighbourhoods.

Affordable secure housing with support services for the homeless is part of the solution the public wants. We are part of a partnership with other groups to develop new, affordable housing on the 12 sites that will strengthen our city and local communities. This initiative has support from the Province, the City, and the general community as an effective way to address homelessness.

St. James’s specific role will be to ensure tenants have the 24 / 7 support they need to live healthy and independent lives in their community. Our staff will also be available to respond to any concerns that may arise within the local community.

“We are very excited to be part of such an important and timely initiative,” says Jonathan Oldman, Executive Director of St. James. “Along with our partners at the 127 Society for Housing, we are pleased to part of the solution to the homeless situation within this particular neighbourhood of Vancouver.”
