May 2010 - $30.6m Construction Funding Announced for Supported Housing Development

In May 2010, the Province of BC, the City of Vancouver, and the StreetoHome Foundation announced capital funding for the 1050 Expo Boulevard supported housing project being undertaken by St. James Community Service Society and the 127 Society for Housing.

The announcement was part of a larger $225 million housing investment plan to build over 1,000 units of housing for the homeless, or those at risk of homelessness, in Vancouver."We're extremely pleased and grateful that this project, so long in the planning, is one huge step closer to reality," says Jonathan Oldman, Executive Director of St. James Community Service Society. "Together, the eight projects will make a huge contribution towards ending homelessness in Vancouver. All the partners involved in this should be very proud of what we are achieving together."The project is to be generously funded by the Province of British Columbia (through BC Housing), the City of Vancouver, and The StreetoHome Foundation. St. James Community Service Society is thrilled to be partnering with The 127 Society for Housing in the development of a new supported housing building on Expo Boulevard in Vancouver.

The proposed building will provide 89 studio apartments to individuals from the local neighbourhood who have very low income and/or who are either homeless (including those living in temporary accommodation such as single room occupancy hotels), or at risk of becoming homeless. It is anticipated that most of the residents will be older adults and seniors (aged 45+).
