From the "Big House" to an affordable home on the Downtown Eastside

Work is now starting in earnest to transform the former Remand Centre at 250 Powell Street into 95 apartments. We’re working with BladeRunners society, a training and employment organization for marginalized Aboriginal youth, on the project, along with BC Housing and the City of Vancouver, who are providing funding. The building’s new design is almost finalized, with the development permit in progress with the City. The project’s architects and contractors are working to develop detailed plans and budgets that will be finalized in the coming months.

St. James executive director Jonathan Oldman says, “Vancouver is an expensive city to live in. It is easy to get behind on rent and end up homeless. The Remand Centre project is a wonderful opportunity to create a mix of housing the in the Downtown Eastside neighbourhood - some for individuals on welfare, the rest affordable for low-income residents - all under one roof.”

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says, “The affordable housing at Powell Street will provide residents with the support and skills training to create a better future for themselves and the community.”
