Jane
When Jane first arrived at Victory House she refused to eat at the house, would instead go to the food line-ups,
hoarded old clothes and food in her room and had a rather unique approach to personal hygiene. Over the course of about a year
Victory House staff worked with Jane constantly trying to get her to stop hoarding clothes, to wash on a regular and consistent
basis and to enjoy the food at Victory House. This vigilance, along with a minor adjustment to Jane's medication, paid off.
Today she eats all her meals at Victory House, maintains an acceptable level of personal hygiene and participates fully in all
activities. Most notably she is one of our amazing artists. This is one of our many small victories that everyone at St. James works toward.
Leslie
One of our women's shelter clients, Leslie a mother, had been very cooperative in creating the videos.
It takes about 6 weeks
to put a video together and over that time Ian Roe, who does the videos, developed quite a bit of respect for Leslie. When it was all over,
recognizing that Leslie and her son had very little but were still very generous with their time and friendship, Ian wanted to thank her for
her time with a gift. Ian and his wife Kim put a lot of thought into what the gift should be and they narrowed it down to a Bay Gift Certificate.
A few weeks after Ian had sent the gift certificate Leslie called Ian to thank him. She listed off some household items and new school clothes
for her son that she was able to purchase. Ian inquired if she had purchased anything for herself on this shopping spree. After a nervous silence
she responded that she had indeed purchased a new pair of underwear. |
