St. James to open 26 women-only shelter beds on Downtown Eastside

 Vancouver – St. James Community Service Society is opening 26 interim women-only emergency shelter beds at 329 Powell Street beginning the week of Nov. 28, 2011.   

St. James Community Service Society has Housed the Homeless for 50 Years

Vancouver has experienced a growing challenge with homelessness in the 50 years St. James Community Service Society has existed. And while homeless counts suggest an encouraging reduction in homeless numbers in recent years, there is still much work to be done. St. James’s long history gives us perspective on how Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has changed over the years, and how the causes, impacts, and challenges of homelessness have evolved.

Vancouver Tour Operator to Stuff its Bus with items for Homeless

 A leading Vancouver tour operator will be collecting items for those who don’t normally feature on sightseeing tours. Landsea Tours & Adventures will, for the fifth year, run its Stuff the Bus drive – literally stuffing one of its buses to the ceiling with donated personal items to go to St. James Community Service Society’s emergency shelters and transitional housing. The campaign is happening throughout Homelessness Action Week, Oct. 10 to 16.

Remembering Elizabeth Taylor in Vancouver

May 1st to 7th is National Hospice Palliative Care Week (NHPCW), a one-week campaign that focuses on raising awareness about hospice palliative care. It is also a time to celebrate, recognize, and share the achievements of hospice palliative care throughout the nation.

To mark this occasion, St. James is releasing a photograph of Elizabeth Taylor presenting a cheque to St. James Community Service in Vancouver in 1999.

Stuff the Bus 2010

"Stuff the Bus" is a charity event that collects donations from the public to literally ‘stuff a bus’ to the ceiling for Vancouver's emergency shelters and transitional housing. It will run in conjunction with Homelessness Action Week (10th - 16th October www.stophomelessness.ca). 'Stuff the Bus' will finish with a fundraising concert at Venue, Granville Street on October 21st.

November 30th, 2009 - 26 New Emergency Housing Beds Opening for Homeless Women

November 30th 2009, St. James Community Service Society (SJCSS) is opening 26 permanent new emergency housing beds for homeless women in Vancouver. The new service, at 625 Powell Street in the Downtown Eastside, will provide possession friendly emergency accommodation on a 24/7 basis, as well as on-site supports to assist residents finding permanent housing.

October 6th 2009 - “Stuff the Bus” Charity Drive and Benefit Concert - Landsea Tours helps Vancouver’s Homeless during Homelessness Action Week

VANCOUVER, B.C. – “Stuff the Bus” is a charity drive that literally fills a bus to the ceiling with blankets and clothing for Vancouver homeless shelters. This year’s event will run October 12 - 22nd in conjunction with Greater Vancouver’s Homeless Action Week.

March 31st 2008 - St. James Transfers Ownership of Hotel to BC Housing

Today St. James Community Service Society completed the sale of Tamura House, a 110 room single room occupancy (SRO) hotel at 398 Powell Street in the Downtown Eastside, to the Province of BC.

"We are extremely pleased to have been able to work with the Minister responsible for Housing, Rich Coleman, and the staff at BC Housing, to ensure Tamura House remains as affordable housing for those most at need in the community," said Jonathan Oldman, Executive Director of St. James.

February 15th 2008 - St. James Selected as a Service Provider for Vancouver Supportive Housing Initiative
